Crystal Baseball signed by Halladay at the 2007 Golf Tournament
The story behind the item made this a memorable and very costly day for me.
I attended the 2007 Blue Jays Golf Tournament and was just sitting down for the dinner at the Sportsnet table with RBJ, Rob C., etc. People were all still giving me the stink eye after winning the car at the Reverse draw earlier in the year. When the young men and ladies came around selling raffle tickets for the 10 prizes available, I quickly said not today as I did not want to take a chance at winning something at the tournament. Well quickly my colleagues were egging me on not to be so cheap and convinced me to buy some raffle tickets. So I bought the 10 for $100 package. I put one ticket in the barbeque as I wouldn’t even know what to do with that and one ticket into the grand price of 2 tickets to Hawaii with 3 nights in Maui and 3 nights in Lanai at the Four Seasons and all the golf I want at Greg Normans courses. I am not a big golfer and prefer flights of 3 hours or less so did not want that. I put the remaining tickets into the Vernon Wells package as it had some great game used items.
Things appeared to be going well as Sam C. from Sportsnet was the MC and calling out the winners and once I didn’t win the Vernon Wells package, I knew it wasn’t my day. I have now consumed 3 beers so I am feeling good so as s joke when Sam was announcing the final prize of the big Hawaii vacation, I started a slow walk to the stage. I knew I could veer of to the washroom as he actually called the number. He saw me walking and started calling the number and yes as you could imagine the surprize on my face and my tables face when they saw me walk right up to Sam. Sam believed I was just kidding as he saw me walking before he called the number. He was stunned as so was I but I think the 3 beers in me saved me from total humiliation. Yes, the booing began again.
Just for consolation that free all expenses paid trip still cost me close to $5,000 as a result of food, transfers extra night stay never mind the close to 30 hours of travel in 7 days which I was not a big fan of.
