Muhammad Ali Signed 1 of 12 Pairs of Terry Fox Shoes to Raise money for Cancer
The Canadian Cancer Society was going to auction off 12 pairs of adidas Replica Terry Fox shoes to raise money and was going to do it on e-bay. Each of the 12 adidas stipes were going to be signed by 11 of the greatest Canadian Athletes and Muhammed Ali. (Gretzky, Orr, Weir, Howe, Classen, Laumann, Walker, Baily, Browning, Le Mae Doan, Lassen)
This was in approximately 2002 and I was attending a dinner at the Eaton Centre Mariott Hotel for the executives of Rogers Media. The timing could not have been worse as all 12 pairs were being auctioned off or closing bids between 7:00pm and 9:30pm that evening.
At my table was the President of Rogers Media “Tony V.” and I had to explain to him why I was leaving the table every 15 minutes. You have to remember back in 2002 wireless internet did not exist so I couldn’t have my laptop connected with me. I had to go to the Store in the Eaton centre Marriot and pay for time to use their computer. I attempted and was unsuccessful on around 6 of the pairs of shoes. It finally got down to the final pair so I would have to place a very high bid and ended up being successful on pair 12 of 12. I was able to purchase it for around the same price as the others as they did not need my maximum bid if you understand how e-bay works. When I received the shoes in the encased Frame, I had them on display in my office at Sportsnet for the first few days.
Although I did not personally get this item signed myself, it still ranks as one of my favorite pieces of memorabilia.
